Staffing agency recruiters work with dozens or hundreds of candidates. The ones who get called first for good opportunities are not always the most qualified — they are the ones who made a strong, reliable impression. Here is what that looks like in practice.
Reliability Is the Single Most Important Factor
Recruiters place candidates they can trust. If a recruiter refers you to a client and you do not show up, arrive late, or leave early without explanation, that reflects on the recruiter’s judgment. Once you have done that once, you are unlikely to be placed again.
Showing up on time, every time, completing assignments without drama, and giving notice before an assignment ends rather than simply disappearing — these behaviours are the foundation of a strong reputation with any agency.
Communication
Recruiters appreciate candidates who are easy to reach and respond promptly. If you receive a call or message about an assignment opportunity, respond the same day. If your availability changes, let your recruiter know before they discover it by sending you somewhere you cannot go.
When an assignment is ending, contact your recruiter in advance. Do not wait for the last day to mention you will soon be available. Proactive communication makes it much easier for a recruiter to line up your next placement.
Resume Clarity and Honesty
Be specific about your skills and experience. A resume that claims broad software or equipment proficiency you do not actually have creates problems — you will be placed in roles you cannot perform, which damages the relationship with both the agency and the client. Recruiters prefer candidates who are precise about what they can and cannot do.
List actual systems, machines, certifications, or skills you have worked with rather than general categories. Specificity helps recruiters match you correctly.
Specialisation Helps You Stand Out
Candidates who have developed expertise in a specific area — a particular type of equipment, a specific software platform, a regulated industry like healthcare or food manufacturing — are more memorable and more placeable than generalists in competitive markets. If you have a marketable specialisation, make sure your recruiter knows about it clearly.
Professional Conduct on Assignment
Your behaviour on assignment is a permanent reference. Client companies give feedback to agencies about temporary workers. A temporary worker who is professional, engaged, and easy to work with builds a track record that opens doors to future placements at the same client and to referrals between agencies.
This is a general guide. Individual agencies and clients vary.
